Taipei City

Taipei is Taiwan's economic, political, and cultural center. It is a modern cosmopolitan metropolis with a lively and diversified face.

Taipei is situated in a basin in northern Taiwan that was inhabited by aboriginal peoples until settlers from China moved into the area about 300 years ago. The polarities of Taipei are vividly present as well in the joining of the urban and natural. And throughout the city there are plenty of trails, and parks.

Language

Mandarin is the official language; however English is spoken in the international meeting.

Climate

Taiwan is 8 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+8).

Currency

The currency of Taiwan is the New Taiwan Dollar (NT$). Foreign currencies can be exchanged at the banks, airport and hotels. Payment by major credit card is accepted almost everywhere around Taiwan. The exchange rate is around US$1 to NT$32.

Tipping & Tax

A 10% service charge is typically added to hotel or restaurant bills. Tipping is not customary in Taiwan.

Electricity

Taiwan uses an electric current of 110 volts at 60 cycles. Many buildings also have 220-volt sockets.

Visitors with appliances of different voltages are urged to bring adapters with them.
