Workshop: Assertive communication for self-advocacy and career advancement

Workshop structure:
The workshop will be highly interactive, focusing on participant engagement, discussion, and exercises around communication for career advocacy, with a focus on planning, networking and communicating one’s value.
Workshop goals:
- Develop better awareness about who and how you are in your professional life.
- Use that awareness to begin planning where you want to go and how you want to get there.
- How to network effectively and advocate for what you want and where you want to go.
Tara Fortier is a project leader and a physicist and has worked in the Time and Frequency Division for nearly 20 years developing lasers to interface with atomic clocks for the realization of optical atomic time and tests of fundamental physics.
In addition to her work in physics and metrology, Dr. Fortier is a certified as a coach for leadership for organizational performance. She is committed to helping advance and create opportunities for underrepresented minorities and women in STEM and at NIST. She currently serves on the executive board for the NIST Women in STEM group and was a lead for the NIST DEIA strategic plan and implementation plan. Finally, she provides leadership to the broader physics community as an Optical Society of America and American Physical Society Fellow.
